May 11, 2018What are the gums and what role they play in your oral health?
Gums also known as gingivae are moist pink tissues in the mouth that connects the base of the teeth. There are two set of gums one for the upper and one for the lower set of teeth. Gingiva is the dense tissue with good supply of blood vessels beneath a moist surface. The surface is called mucous membrane. Instead of being shiny red it is pink in color and connected to the mouth lining.
The main function of gums is to protect the fragile tooth roots from bacteria, plaque, and other forms of decay. Usually you will find that the gums tightly surround the teeth up to the neck of each tooth and are firmly attached to the jaw bone. The gums usually cover the roots of the teeth, thereby safeguarding them as they are more delicate than the rest of the teeth. In event of gingival recession or receding gums they the delicate tooth roots are exposed to bacteria, plaque, and other forms of decay.
What is the cause of receding gums?
Gums recede mainly due to poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease which are notably linked to gingival recession. However it is found that people with good oral hygiene too suffer from issues of receding gums.
The main causes of receding gums include:
- Physical wear of the gums is usually caused due to vigorous tooth brushing or use of hard bristles leading to receding gums.
- Inflammation of the gum tissues – is one of the main causes of receding gums. Periodontal disease is a common cause of receding gums as it leads to the loss of the supporting bone around a tooth through an inflammatory reaction. Many times periodontal disease is caused by plaque buildup which is a sticky film that forms on the teeth.
Due to plaque buildup on teeth, the inflamed gums condition gingivitis leads to another condition called as periodontitis. If you are you loved one is affected by periodontitis consult periodontist for treatment of spaces between the gums and teeth and loss of connective fibers and bone around the tooth roots.
- Some people are prone to receding gums because of inherited factors.
